Carla Manent, mobile app product owner at Tui Group and 30 Under 30 candidate, talks about her career in travel.

Hailing from Barcelona, Carla Manent, mobile app product owner at Tui Group, graduated with a BA in business administration and a Masters in Marketing Management from Esade Business School in her home city before taking a CEMS Masters in International Management at Bocconi University in Milan.

Fostering a passion for the entertainment industry, specifically television and film, Carla began a six-month internship at Disneyland Paris as trade marketing assistant in 2011.

Here she was responsible for the execution, development and tracking of online marketing campaigns while participating in the creative development of projects.

In 2014 she made the move to the UK and into the Tui Group as part of the company’s International Graduate Leadership Programme, which consisted of five three-month assignments across the business in multiple countries.

Training programme
“I started out at the Luton offices developing booking apps before moving to the offices in France to work in the product and purchasing side of the business. Next up was Germany and finance, followed by a placement in Mexico in the destination services team.”

Manent describes her time in Mexico as a career highlight. “I was working closely with the director of our destination services’ long-haul operations and that was a great learning experience.

And at the same time I had regular exposure to parts of the company I never had access to before; one day I was talking to our customers with the holiday reps, the next I was taking travel agents on an educational tour.”

Appy days
Following her success within the graduate programme, Manent was offered a full time position at the Tui Group in 2016.

Her day-to-day responsibilities as the mobile app product owner include defining, prioritising, and delivering new projects and features in the search and booking section of the application.

“My day starts with a quick meeting with the delivery team to catch up on what they’re working on and if they have anything blocking them.

The rest is spent supporting the delivery of the features the team is currently working on, analysing how our latest projects are performing, prioritising which ideas we want to work on in the future, planning when we can do them and defining how these could work.”

For Manent the future is still within Tui; however, she hopes the position will see her move further afield.

“I would like to be somewhere warmer than London, that’s for sure. I see myself taking what I’m learning now and using it to drive the digital transformation in different areas of the business.”

With regards to TTG’s 30 Under 30, it is the social aspect of the programme in particular that has stood out for Manent.

“It’s been fascinating meeting and sharing experiences with people from all over the industry.

It’s rare to get the opportunity to connect with such a diverse profile of people, ranging from talent in big companies that we partner with to inspiring entrepreneurs who have started businesses from scratch.”

Paul Nelson, press & PR manager at World Travel Market portfolio – sponsors of Tomorrow’s Travel Leaders – says:

Manent has studied and worked in cities around the world, gaining her impressive range of qualifications in Spain and Italy, then working in France, Germany and Mexico – not forgetting a stint in Luton.
Like her employer, the Tui Group, she has an international outlook on life.

She seized opportunities wherever they arose – at Disneyland Paris or with Tui’s International Graduate Leadership Programme – regardless of borders. The Tui programme gave her valuable experience across a wide range of disciplines, covering technology, purchasing and destination services.

Now, her work as Tui’s mobile app product owner puts her in the vanguard of the company’s digital transformation and will stand her in good stead for her progression.

Her network of contacts gained from TTG’s 30 Under 30 scheme will help her realise her ambitions – whether in the UK or overseas; with Tui or another company; or even setting up her own business.
