AmaWaterways plans to build a second double-width ship following the success of AmaMagna, which is expected to debut in 2027.
Co-founder and executive vice-president Kristin Karst confirmed the river line’s plans to build a successor to the 196-passenger AmaMagna, launched in May 2019, during an address at the Travel Leaders Network Edge conference in Washington DC.
Further details about the new ship will follow "in due course" said AmaWaterways when approached for further comment by TTG.
At 22 metres, AmaMagna is almost double the width of a typical river ship, but accommodates only around 20% more guests, allowing for more spacious staterooms and additional facilities.
The ship features four restaurants, an onboard cinema, a wellness studio and sun deck, complete with heated pool, whirlpool and sky bar. Ama introduced a full-size pickleball court in 2023.
Plans for a new double-width ship come just a fortnight after the line revealed it would debut another two new ships – AmaSofia and AmaDara – in 2026. AmaSofia will sail the Danube and the Rhine, while AmaDara will sail the Mekong.
In April, Ama launched its second Nile ship – AmaLilia – and is preparing to start sailing Colombia’s Magdalena River with another two new ships – AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia.
Back in March, TTG rounded up some of the major river cruise developments coming over the next two years in terms of new vessels and new itineraries – including Ama’s Nile ships, its Colombia launch and plans next year for a new Douro ship.
And in an interview with TTG in February, Ama’s UK chief Jamie Loizou said the line would continue to break down misconceptions around river cruising.
