Carnival Corporation has rerouted 12 ships’ itineraries due to “recent developments” in the Red Sea and the surrounding region.
Multiple attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on merchant vessels have been carried out recently, destabilising the situation in the region.
Since the start of the month, MSC Cruises and Silversea Cruises have changed or cancelled sailings because of the risk to ships passing through the Red Sea.
Carnival Corp said the affected vessels operated across seven of its nine brands and were due to sail through the Red Sea in May 2024.
It added that the full extent of the Red Sea situation on booking trends had not yet been seen, but noted there would be no more Red Sea transits between May and November 2024.
Carnival Corp said it had experienced “an early and robust start to wave”, with bookings volumes since November at an all-time high.
“For 2024, the company continues to have the best booked position on record, with both pricing and occupancy considerably higher than 2023 levels,” it added.
“In fact, the first half of 2024 is almost fully booked. The company believes its continued strong bookings momentum is expected to deliver outperformance during the year, offsetting the Red Sea rerouting impact.”
