Paul Mundy, the businessman who is believed to have opened the first cruise-only agency in the UK, has died aged 88.
Paul and his wife Judith founded Paul Mundy Ltd in 1970 when it was not an easy time to launch a business.
That year, Boeing had introduced the 747 and ocean cruising looked like a risky bet, with the advent of the jet plane threatening to eclipse sea travel.
Intriguingly, Paul’s family firm, EH Mundy, had already closed its passenger division to focus on freight.
However, Paul passionately believed in the broad appeal of cruise holidays even though in the 1970s they were considered a “narrow minority pursuit”, said Edwina Lonsdale, Mundy Cruising’s managing director, who started working for Paul in 1989.
Lonsdale continued: “What a mentor. Paul knew the industry inside out, and his connections stretched across the world.
“All the great and the good of the cruise industry crossed our threshold in those early days to visit this highly respected guru, a pioneer of the modern-day cruise industry.
“And for all the years since his retirement in 1999, Paul’s wise counsel has continued to be a valuable resource within our company.”
She added that “warm” tributes have flooded since his passing on 8 February.
“Three words common to nearly all stand out,” Lonsdale said. “Firstly ‘gentleman’; in all of his doings Paul is remembered for his unfailing courtesy and kindness.
“Secondly, ‘supportive’; no matter how senior or junior the people he was dealing with, all remember Paul as offering the most considerate and personal support that he could.
“And finally, he is treasured for his mischievous sense of humour, which always ensured that meetings ended with a smile.”
Paul is survived by Judith, his wife of more than 60 years. A celebration of his life will be held soon.
