Flights to Mauritius have been suspended after the island nation’s only international airport shut as a precaution owing to the arrival of Cyclone Belal.
Flag carrier Air Mauritius cancelled five international services scheduled for Tuesday (16 January) after island authorities issued a class three cyclone warning.
Officials said the airport would remain closed until further notice, while the airline called on passengers not to show up at the hub until their flights had been rescheduled.
“Air Mauritius will keep its passengers informed about their affected flights through its call centre, on its website, on its social media platforms and through regular communiques,” the carrier said. “Air Mauritius regrets any inconvenience caused by this situation beyond its control.”
Local authorities also urged people to “maintain precaution and stay in safe places”, while the UK Foreign Office warned British holidaymakers to follow official instructions.
The Mauritian met office said: “Wind will blow from the west at about 30kmph, with gusts reaching 80kmph. Seas will be high with swells of five to seven metres beyond the reefs. Storm surge will cause coastal inundation along low-lying coastal areas. It is strictly advised not to go out at sea and to avoid venturing along beaches.”
"Tropical Cyclone Belal will continue to influence the weather in Mauritius this week," said the FCDO. "A cyclone warning Class III is in force in Mauritius. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate. If you are visiting Mauritius, follow guidance and instructions from local authorities closely.
"The SSR International Airport will temporarily be closed from 16.30 local time on 15 January following cyclone warnings."
