Airlines serving Mauritius are working to get their schedules back on track after the country’s only international airport reopened late on Tuesday (16 January) following the passage of Cyclone Belal.
The airport shut earlier this week as the storm struck the island, bringing high winds and heavy rain leaving some passengers displaced and others unable to proceed with their travel plans.
Air Mauritius has since confirmed several flights to and from the UK, Australia, South Africa and nearby Reunion would be rescheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (17-18 January).
Passengers affected by the storm have been advised not to crowd the airport and only travel there if they have received confirmation that their flight has been rescheduled.
“Passengers are strongly advised to contact their respective airlines for further information on the status of their flights and not to proceed to the airport unless receiving confirmation of the revised departure time,” said Airports of Mauritius (AML) in a statement.
Local authorities have warned people to “maintain all precautions” with Belal poised to leave additional disruption in its wake this week, including isolated thunderstorms and strong waves of up to seven metres in the open sea.
“Remain cautious and follow instructions from local authorities closely,” said the UK Foreign Office in an updated travel advisory, issued on Tuesday (16 January), which has been advising British travellers throughout the storm.
