Greece’s tourism authorities have firmed up plans to offer holidaymakers whose breaks were affected by last summer’s devastating wildfires in Rhodes a free, week-long stay.
The Rodos Week initiative is aimed at tourists who were residing in hotels that had to be evacuated during last July’s forest fires, offering them a six-night stay on the island.
Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the pledge during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain last year.
Too hot to handle? Travel faces up to the climate crisis
Around 20,000 people were evacuated from hotels and resorts after wildfires swept across large swathes of southern Rhodes, prompting action from Jet2holidays, easyJet holidays and Tui, among others.
TTG’s Gary Noakes headed to Rhodes in the immediate aftermath of the wildfires, reflecting on the stoicism of the island’s hoteliers and their insistence the tourism economy on the island would rebound.
Visitors will receive an e-voucher to put towards a stay in a hotel of a similar category as that they stayed in during the fires, which can be used for a holiday between 10 April and 31 May or 1 October and 15 November.
The voucher, though, will be valid only for hotels that participating in the hospitality hotels registry created for the Rodos Week initiative.
On Friday (29 March), all those affected by the fires received their invitation to register to the Rodos Week initiative and retrieve their e-voucher via email.
Holidaymakers contacted by the affected hotels and tour operators will be able to send their application between 10 April and 26 May.
Meanwhile, those who are eligible but were not registered by the evacuated hotels and tour operators can still submit their application until Thursday (4 April), so long as they are able to provide details of their hotel and room, and other their payment method and reservation number.
