The closure of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has been extended until the end of the week in line with the latest advice from the country’s met office.
The spa had been due to review the closure on Wednesday (3 January); an update issued late on Wednesday confirmed the closure had been extended until close of play on Friday (5 January) after meteorologists monitoring the ongoing seismic activity in southwest Iceland warned of the potential for further volcanic eruptions.
“At that time [Friday], the situation will be reassessed,” the spa said in a statement. “All guests with confirmed bookings in the upcoming days will be contacted.”
The geothermal facility has been closed for the most part since mid-November following high levels of volcanic activity along Iceland’s southwesterly Reykjanes peninsula, which is also home to the country’s only international airport, Keflavik.
It partially reopened on 18 December, but it had to close after less than 24 hours due to new volcanic activity.
