Iceland’s famous geothermal spa Blue Lagoon, which shut its doors over Christmas and the new year due to volcanic activity, will review its ongoing closure this week.
The spa said it would review the decision on Wednesday (3 January) despite the Icelandic Met Office warning of possible new eruptions. “The likelihood of another magma intrusion and an eruption increases with each passing day,” officials said on 29 December.
Nevertheless the spa said it was working alongside authorities to monitor the situation over the coming days. “All guests with confirmed bookings in the upcoming days will be contacted,” Blue Lagoon said.
The geothermal facility has been closed for the most part since mid-November following heightened levels of volcanic activity along the country’s southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, which is also home to Iceland’s only international airport – Keflavik.
The spa partially reopened on 18 December but it was forced to shut its doors again less than a day later due to new volcanic activity in the area.
