The UK’s major package operators, including Jet2holidays and easyJet holidays, say they are closely monitoring a number of wildfires on the outskirts of Athens, which has seen thousands of residents evacuated from their homes over the past few days.
The fires north east of the Greek capital have affected towns such as Varnavas and Vrilissia, as well as the historic site of Marathon and the area surrounding Mount Penteli. They follow Greece’s hottest June and July on record, as well as its earliest-ever summer heatwave.
More than 700 firefighters, supported by nearly 200 firefighting vehicles, dozens of aircraft and members of military personnel, have been fighting up to 40 separate wildfires since early August. Flames of up to 25 metres were reported on Monday (12 August).
Greece’s prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis came home early from his own summer holiday to lead the response, while Greece has called for support from the EU. Evacuation orders have been enacted for 30 areas.
While there have been no impacts yet for international leisure travel, with Athens airport – situated south east of the city – operating normally, both Jet2holidays and easyJet holidays have issued advice to holidaymakers in Greece or preparing to travel, with both operators offering Athens holidays and city breaks.
"We’re closely monitoring the situation in the Marathon area of Athens, and are working with our partners in destination," said easyJet holidays. "We’d like to remind our customers currently in the area to continue following the guidance of their hotel and the local authorities.
"For customers due to travel tomorrow [Tuesday 12 August] and in the coming days, their holiday is currently scheduled to go ahead as planned. Should the situation change, we’ll be in touch directly to discuss next steps. The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our highest priority."
Jet2holidays added: "We are aware of the wildfires affecting an area of Athens and are monitoring the situation closely. As it currently stands, Athens airport is still open and we are planning to operate our flights as planned. Please allow extra time for you journey to the airport, as there may be road closures in place."
