A volcanic eruption less than 50 miles from Mexico City is threatening to cause flight disruption, the Foreign Office has warned travellers.
An ash cloud has developed after the Popocatepetl volcano erupted on Tuesday evening (27 February). Flights were initially disrupted, but services to and from the UK are operating as normal on Wednesday (28 February).
The FCDO has not advised against travel, but said: “On 27 February, ash fall from Popocatepetl caused flight disruption, including cancellations at Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City.
"If you are travelling, you should check your flight status direct with your airline.”
Benito Juarez International is Mexico City’s main international airport.
Aeromexico said owing to the presence of volcanic ash, which has affected "some operations" at the airport, it was offering up to a week’s flexibility on certain flight bookings.
