Jet2holidays has unveiled a new sustainability labelling scheme for its hotels, with a dedicated product stream available to agents via a specific landing page on its trade website.
The launch of the scheme, several years in the making, comes after chief executive Steve Heapy last month urged agents to get ready for an "exponential" uptick in demand for sustainable and lower-carbon holidays.
Jet2 on Tuesday (19 December) confirmed more than 800 hotels would bear the Certified Sustainable Hotel check mark at launch, highlighting their efforts to achieve standards recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
Founded in 2010 by the United Nations Foundation, the GSTC is an NGO that monitors and certifies global standards, as well as international accreditation for sustainable tourism.
“The launch of our ‘Certified Sustainable Hotels’ labelling scheme gives independent travel agents the ability to easily search and book with that in mind, so that they can choose a holiday that is right for their customers,” said Heapy.
Jet2holidays has also launched a new Sustainable Hotel Charter, which focuses on supporting its hotel partners to obtain Foundation for Environmental Education’s Green Key certification – a GSTC-recognised standard.
Heapy added: “As a responsible airline and tour operator, we have already taken many tangible steps on our journey to reach our sustainability targets, and today is the latest example of how we are continuing to work to become more sustainable in the air, on the ground and in-resort."
As part of its 2050 net-zero strategy, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays has invested in what is set to be one of the UK’s first sustainable aviation fuel production plants. It also has nearly 150 more fuel-efficient aircraft on order.
