With a portfolio of more than 230 pristine ports and landing sites across 15 destinations, Hurtigruten Expeditions takes explorers to the planet’s most otherworldly and breathtaking locations.

From Antarctica to the Arctic, Galapagos to Guinea Bissau, as well as the legendary Northwest Passage, these are destinations where explorers are guaranteed extraordinary encounters with nature, people and wildlife.

These adventures are rewarding for both clients and the planet, with their keen focus on sustainability. Typical Hurtigruten Expedition customers are in their sixties, and are interested in environmental issues, wildlife, plants and fauna, and many share hobbies around astronomy, heritage sites, walking and photography. An expedition cruise promises unrivalled opportunities to indulge and expand their interests.

AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES

Explorer DNA is embedded in the brand’s heritage, as it has been sailing in the Arctic for nearly 130 years.

The team is keen to share this expertise, and the expedition team brings each destination to life through captivating lectures and activities focusing on science, nature, culture and history.

On an expedition cruise the itinerary is dictated by the weather, ice and wildlife, which creates a sense of excitement and forges a bond between clients and their destination. Adventurers are encouraged to get close to wildlife without being intrusive, and enjoy formative and inspirational travel experiences.

FOLLOWING CURIOSITY

A voyage with Hurtigruten Expeditions is certainly no ordinary cruise, and for tangible evidence of the adventure and natural beauty clients can expect, look to Antarctica.

It’s the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth, where penguins outnumber people and where there are only two seasons and no time zones.

The frozen continent is one of Hurtigruten Expeditions’ most popular destinations. Travelling on the line’s small ships, guests can join ice landings, cruise past frozen landscapes, spot birds from small boats, snowshoe to penguin colonies and kayak among icebergs and seals.

With an abundance of rich wildlife and stunning natural snow-capped beauty, there is no better way to explore the continent of Antarctica.

ENVIRONMENTAL PIONEERS

Hurtigruten is a founding member of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO). The group was established in 1991 to promote safe and environmentally responsible travel to the fragile destination, which is designated as a nature reserve devoted to peace and science.

Hurtigruten Expedition’s vice-president of government and industry relations Tudor Morgan is the chair of the IAATO executive committee, and by being part of the organisation the line is working to protect and preserve the polar region.

CHAMPIONING SUSTAINABILITY

Hurtigruten Expeditions has been exploring the world since 1893, and to inspire the next generation the line is supporting the #WeTwo Foundation, which encourages young people to embrace the outdoors and look after the planet.

In November 2022, 10 underprivileged young people will journey to the white continent on Hurtigruten Expeditions’ hybrid-ship Fridtjof Nansen, where they will join the expedition team in a series of Citizen Science projects. These vital projects are offered to all guests and provide scientists with valuable data, such as tracking whales and leopard seals, and studying phytoplankton.

Hurtigruten Expeditions follows the ethos of “arriving as a guest, leaving as a friend”. When clients visit Antarctica with the line they will leave the lightest of footprints, but become a roving global Antarctica ambassador.

LIFE AS AN ADVENTURER

LIFE AS AN ADVENTURER

Tudor Morgan, Hurtigruten Expeditions’ vice-president of government and industry relations:

What are the highlights of an expedition to Antarctica?

There are so many; the scenery, marine and bird life. If you voyage at the start of the Antarctic season, which runs from late October to March, you’ll see the area come out of winter, which is magical. In the mid-season you can see penguin chicks. As winter returns, it’s equally spectacular. No wildlife documentary can replace seeing it in person.

What’s life like on onboard?

The big surprise is how friendly it is, with comfortable cabins and relaxed public spaces. We don’t have a dress code, casino or big entertainment venue. The stars of our voyages are the destinations, the journey and the expedition teams bringing it to life.

What is a typical day?

There isn’t one, which makes our voyages so unique. Clients can join our expedition team at a lecture, briefing or discussion or join shore landings at wildlife colonies, historic sites and scenic locations. They could go kayaking, try painting, photography, navigation or even knitting! Many travellers love collecting data in the Science Center too.
