Petra Roach, chief executive of the Grenada Tourism Authority, guides us through her top reasons for selling the Spice Island of Grenada in 2023
Petra says: "Grenada is the true gem of the Caribbean – visitors often refer to it as “the Caribbean’s best-kept secret” and it really is. From our picturesque landscapes and stunning waterfalls to unforgettable dive sites and mouth-watering cuisine, Grenada has it all. Grenada is a tri-island state so visitors also have the opportunity to hop over to the beautiful islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinque, where they can unwind on the secluded pristine paradise beach in Carriacou or hike up to the Piton in Petite Martinique."
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly between London and Grenada. BA operates flights twice a week from Gatwick via Saint Lucia, with a third flight set to be added to the schedule from 30 October via Antigua. The additional capacity will boost connectivity and offer extra choice and flexibility to UK travellers. Virgin Atlantic also operates flights twice a week via Barbados.
Petra says: "Earlier this year we launched a new initiative designed to support our smaller hotel properties. Simple Stays Grenada has been carefully curated to enhance the visibility and viability of smaller hotel properties in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Each property in the programme has access to marketing and financial support, which can be used for upgrades to their facilities and towards employee skills training. Visitors staying at any of the hotels participating in the initiative benefit from discounts on a number of experiences, from destination tours and diving to snorkelling and kayaking."
Petra says: "We launched our voluntourism programme earlier this year, which offers visitors the chance to engage with the local community, culture and environment by making a lasting impact through volunteering. The programme includes a variety of activities within multiple sectors across agriculture, environment, education, and health. Some examples of the voluntourism programmes available include the Grand Anse Artificial Reef Project, which encourages participants to help with underwater clean-ups, and Get Swimming Grenada, which is a non-profit organisation that offers free swimming lessons to children on the island who otherwise could not afford private lessons."
Petra says: "This year we hosted our first annual Dive and Conservation festival, pairing underwater excursions with lectures and workshops on various local environmental issues from experts around the world. The festival enables guests to explore exceptional dive sites while also having the opportunity to give back and engage in conservation conversations. Sustainability is at the core of all our activity, and this is something we want to showcase during the festival. Grenada’s next Dive and Conservation Festival will be between 29 May and 6 June 2023, and we will have a link with tickets available to purchase on our Pure Grenada website soon."
Petra says: "Grenada is quickly becoming a premier sports event destination, specifically for rugby and cricket. Earlier this year, Grenada hosted England’s third Test match in the West Indies, which brought cricket fans and adventure seekers alike to our beautiful destination. Our Grenada 11 team participated in a cricket tour in the UK in July and this year Grenada’s National Cricket Stadium will be the new home of the longest running Club Rugby 7s tournament in the region on 2-3 December. We’re looking forward to welcoming more than 30 of the world’s best men and women Club Rugby 7s teams to the island for a week of official activities. Sports tourism is a real focus for us so to host this very prestigious tournament is a major win for Grenada."
