As the deadline approaches to apply for the TTG scholarship, Trish Coll, course leader, School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Beckett University, offers an overview of what the two beneficiaries stand to gain.
Two new TTG scholarships will cover the tuition fees for two degree courses that are completed via distance learning – a BSc (Hons) Travel Business Management and an MSc Travel Business Leadership.
The Leeds Beckett University part-time distance learning courses provide 24/7 online access to learning resources, wherever and whenever the student chooses to study. This is high-quality education for travel professionals on the move – literally! Our flexibility empowers learners to decide when they are ready to learn, and they can arrange their 10 hours’ study per week around work obligations.
Activities and assessments all have real-world relevance, so distance learners feel confident when writing about the business of travel within an academic framework.
At Leeds Beckett, we are very proud to be ranked first in the world for technology in a global survey of university students. Our distance learning programmes are fully supported by an extensive range of expertise – from the team of professional instructional designers who develop them, to our experienced travel and tourism academics who create and deliver the course content. Embedded links take learners directly to a range of resources, such as key reading, concept boards, discussion blogs, mini lectures, ‘talking heads: industry insights from experts’, corporate case studies and company data.
We also understand that distance learners often need additional support, especially when working in a new or unfamiliar way, so we employ online learning tutors to provide help and assistance directly to the student.
BSc (Hons) Travel Business Management (top up) – scholars are exempt from years one and two of a degree, based on their previous educational qualifications or professional work experience.
This means they have to study the final year only. Up to two years part-time, studying five modules worth 20 credits each (40 credits for the double dissertation module).
MSc Travel Business Leadership - up to three years part-time, studying eight modules worth 20 credits each (40 credits for the double dissertation module). Unlike other courses, our masters concentrates on the demand side of the industry, focusing on tour operators, travel intermediaries, transport providers, travel industry technology and responsible tourism management.
14 weeks per module, including two weeks of induction, 10 study weeks and two weeks of assessment
10 hours of online study per week
Three modules per year (with intakes in January, May and September)
Two assessments per module
Module content is updated and refreshed, ready for each new cohort of students
Award-winning Virtual Learning Environment
24-hour access, seven days a week to learning materials, with all the convenience and flexibility that distance learning brings.
David Hind, head of school, events, tourism and hospitality, Leeds Beckett University, adds: “Since the launch of our online travel degrees in association with the Institute for Travel and Tourism, we have been delighted with the response received from the travel industry.
“Senior HR executives from across the sector have confirmed the relevance of the content of our degrees for the professional development of their staff and we are extremely grateful for the way in which the UK’s leading travel companies have sponsored their employees to study with us.
“These degrees have been designed for the travel industry following an extensive consultation with senior managers on what they considered the content should be.
“We are extremely proud of the contemporary online travel degrees that are the result of this industry-led approach to course development.”
