This week our undercover shopper was in Woodbridge, Suffolk where an immaculately dressed consultant won the day
The mystery shopper visited two travel agencies in Woodbridge, Suffolk, and requested a 10- to 15-day escorted tour of Peru for two people in November, with a budget of £5,000.
They then made two Google.co.uk searches using the term ‘Escorted Tour Peru’.

Mystery Shopper said: The shop was bright and inviting and I was greeted by an immaculately dressed consultant. I was asked a lot of questions about my likes and dislikes and the type of accommodation and excursions I wanted. The agent used the brochure to ensure that every aspect of the holiday was covered and I was advised to see my GP about vaccinations. I was impressed with their knowledge, even though they had never been to Peru.
They recommended Mercury Holidays’ Sacred Peru escorted tour at £3,790 for two people. This included half-board, transfers and flights from Heathrow. They gave me two options to travel in November with the earlier date being £100 cheaper. The consultant did not put pressure on me to book – perhaps because I said I needed to discuss it with my partner first – but I was guided in every aspect of the conversation.

How long have you been in travel?
A long time – I started when I was 16 and it’s been 25 years.
Why did you want to get into travel?
I love meeting new people and helping them to have a great holiday.
How often do you sell Peru?
I’ve made a few bookings over the years. The team here have great knowledge, even though we have never actually been.
Any tips for selling it?
Warn clients that it can be an active destination and ask them about how fit they are and if they are able to get around OK. I would always recommend an escorted tour.
What is your favourite destination?
I love the excitement of New York, and Australia’s beauty.
What destination is on your bucket list?
New Zealand. The landscapes are stunning and it seems like a very diverse place.
TTG has teamed up with React Surveys to simulate a realistic booking process each week – that means a mystery shopper looking for the best deal from agents and operators on the high street, online, on TV or in newspapers. The Mystery Shopper research is carried out on behalf of TTG by React Surveys, and no further details or information can be disclosed. Researchers take into consideration first impression, sales process, product and budget match and extras offered before giving an unbiased opinion of which channel/company they would have booked with on that occasion. We do not claim that the winner is the best in an area or specialist sector, as we may report on competing travel firms in the future. Please note that the aim of Mystery Shopper is not to criticise individual agents or companies, but to promote good sales technique for the benefit of all in the travel trade.
