Q&A: 'Visitors are surprised by the sheer variety of experiences we offer in Abu Dhabi'

Tourism developments are coming thick and fast in the UAE capital, which has ambitions to become one of the world’s greatest cultural and entertainment destinations. We chat to Abdulla Yousuf, director of international operations, at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi

How is the UK market performing for Abu Dhabi?

Since the lifting of the Covid-19 rules, we have seen a strong response in the market. We are looking at a year-long sales incentive for travel agent and tour operator partners this year, which we will be communicating in

due course.

What is the biggest misconception about the destination?

What tends to surprise visitors about our country the most is the sheer variety of experiences that are on offer, all within close proximity to one another. To give you an idea, Yas Island welcomes the world with year-round theme park and entertainment for families and all ages while, only 15 minutes away, Saadiyat Island is filled with living culture, home to Louvre Abu Dhabi’s timeless inspiration. Located at the heart of the island, Saadiyat Cultural District also hosts community events and exhibitions, and is the future home of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, and the immersive art of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.

What experiences help visitors to learn more about your culture and traditions?

For cultural inspiration on Abu Dhabi’s past, present and future, travellers can explore the nation’s living memorial and the narrator of Abu Dhabi’s history, Qasr Al Hosn, an 18th-century stone building in the heart of city. It is home to the House of Artisans, which celebrates Emirati heritage and enduring tradition of craftsmanship. Not far from the city you can find adventure and tranquillity among the desert dunes and embrace Abu Dhabi’s fascinating past by visiting the iconic museums and ancient forts of Unesco-listed Al Ain.

What tips do you have for exploring Abu Dhabi on a budget?

Visitors don’t need to spend much money to enjoy the UAE’s capital. They can even travel for free using the Visit Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus. On a visit to Al Ain, the capital’s ancient and lush garden city, travellers must visit one of the UAE’s largest forts, Al Jahili. The fort’s lush gardens and exhibition halls are free to stroll through and enjoy. One of the exhibits is dedicated to explorer, Sir Wilfred Thesiger who crossed the Empty Quarter — the world’s largest sand mass — twice in the 1940s.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive day at the beach, choose Corniche Beach. The beach is two kilometres of white sand and turquoise waters; a dreamy spot to get some sun. While there, visitors can enjoy a free family-friendly day out at the Heritage Village on the Corniche breakwater. Go back in time and discover how pre-modern Emirati lives were lived in a traditional oasis village, complete with a souk, mosque and camp.

What are the most exciting upcoming hotel developments?

New openings this year include LXR Hotels & Resorts – Nawras Island, a private luxury resort by Hilton. The hotel is ideal for leisure seekers, families and couples, featuring an expansive golf course, private marina, beach club, three swimming pools and more.

Additionally, further cementing its prominent position in the Middle East’s hospitality market, Rotana has signed agreements for several new openings across this year, including the management agreement of Bloom Arjaan by Rotana located in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island.

How is Abu Dhabi working to become a more sustainable destination?

Sustainability is very important to Abu Dhabi and a key focus for us. Abu Dhabi established its Environment Vision 2030 with an aim to preserve and enhance the emirate’s natural heritage and promote the efficient use of resources within its communities. While the programme primarily aims to minimise the impact of climate change, contribute to clean air, conserve water resources, safeguard biodiversity and manage waste, it relies heavily on public participation. Abu Dhabi government agencies have worked in close collaboration with local partners to develop initiatives that invite residents and visitors to join in the cause for the environment.

Each year we also host Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW): a global platform for accelerating the world’s sustainable development. The week brings together a unique fusion of policy makers, industry specialists, technology pioneers and the next generation of sustainability leaders.
