Start in Derry~Londonderry, which is famed for being the only remaining completely walled city on the island of Ireland, and it’s easy to explore on foot. Guided walking tours depart several times a day and are one of 10 attractions included in the Visit Derry Pass, which is valid for one or two days and offers a saving on admission fees. 

Several fascinating museums are included, such as the Tower Museum, which tells the story of the area and offers panoramic city views. Or, suggest the Museum of Free Derry, located in the Bogside area, which can also be combined with a walking tour.

After a morning of exploring, recommend refuelling at a restaurant in the charming Craft Village before browsing the artisan craft shops. 

Fans of the hit Channel 4 show Derry Girls should head to Badger’s Bar and Restaurant opposite the Foyleside shopping centre, as the side of the building showcases a huge mural featuring the cast of the show, or join a Derry Girls tour to see locations used during filming. 

UNEARTHING HISTORY 

Visitors wanting to discover how the past shaped the city of today can head to the ancient Saint Columb’s Cathedral. Save time to visit The Guildhall, which is one of the most recognisable local landmarks, built in neo-gothic style with a stunning collection of stained glass windows and a clock modelled on London’s Big Ben. 

Then it’s just a short walk to the city’s famous Peace Bridge, which was built in 2011 and connects the two sides of the River Foyle. It leads over to Ebrington Square, where the luxury Ebrington Hotel & Spa will open in 2023. The square is also home to the multi-award-winning Walled City Brewery gastropub, offering a unique range of signature brews and stunning food. 

Finally, head back over the bridge for a nightcap, as no trip here is complete without experiencing the traditional live music and atmosphere of Peader O’Donnells bar. 

DAY 2: DONEGAL

EASY ACCESS 

Kinnagoe Bay in County Donegal is just a 45-minute drive from Derry~Londonderry, offering peaceful beach walks on the east coast of the Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal. 

Further along on the spectacular coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way, Malin Head is Ireland’s most northerly point and an area of great scenic beauty. Visitors can also join a tour here to see locations used in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and enjoy lunch at Ireland’s most northerly bar, Farren’s Bar. 

INTO THE WILD 

For something quirky, recommend animal lovers try a lighthearted trek guided by a friendly alpaca at Wild Alpaca Way. Or there’s the Wild Ireland animal sanctuary, which is located in an ancient Celtic rainforest and is home to brown bears, European wolves, wild boar and lynx.
