The Valais region of Switzerland is home to 45 summits above 4,000 metres, which promise a thrilling setting for an end-of-season ski holiday.
While the arrival of spring heralds crisp blue skies and sunny days in the Valais, the region’s high altitude means there’s still plenty of snow, with the season lasting through Easter until late April.
The area includes 49 ski resorts, offering 2,000 kilometres of ski pistes and extensive winter trails. The local DMC, the Valais Matterhorn Region company, supports agents with offers, product recommendations, bookings and logistics. Here the team suggest five of the best late ski experiences for your clients to enjoy:
The Aletsch Arena is located in a Unesco World Heritage Site and provides views of the nearby Great Alesch Glacier – the largest in the Alps. Guests can also marvel at the iconic Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe. The car-free resorts of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp all provide ski-in, ski-out access to the slopes.
Whatever visitors plan to do, the Aletsch Explorer Pass is just the ticket to get unlimited mobility in the Aletsch Arena. It’s valid on all cable cars within the Aletsch Arena as well as the train route from Brig to Furgangen. The Aletsch Explorer is available from one to 21 days and is the best way to explore the Alesch Arena at the end of the season.
In Saas-Fee/Saastal the perfectly prepared pistes have an elevation of up to 3,600m, making them the second highest in Switzerland. Skiers can challenge themselves on the thrilling descents, soak up the sun as they enjoy apres-ski delights and explore the pretty and car-free village of Saas-Fee.
Winter is also the ideal time to go off the beaten track and try alpine canyoning. A mountain guide will take you through the wild and rugged Fee gorge leading from Saas-Fee down to Saas-Grund. The spectacular tour passes frozen waterfalls and takes you across suspension bridges, ladders and steel ropes. A high-speed Tyrolean zip-line and cable pulleys are the highlights of this trip.
The best way to test the Alps' highest sledge run at Gornergrat is with the Snow Fun Pass. It includes the trip up to the peak, unlimited train rides from Rotenboden to Riffelberg and even equipment rental, including snow shoes or toboggans. It’s available as an all-day or half-day ticket.
Mont-Fort is the highest mountain in the 4 Vallees, and a brand new panoramic platform gives views across the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Grand Combin. Guests can either ski down the challenging slope, or zoom along the highest zip line in Europe, which is 1,400m long and travels at 100kmph, over the Tortin glacier. It’s accessible from the villages of Nendaz and Veysonnaz.
The Region Dents du Midi encompasses six villages and is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, with a panorama stretching from Mont Blanc to the Dents du Midi, between France and Switzerland. Clients can access it all with one pass, and the 600km of slopes combine to make the world’s largest international linked ski area.
