'World Safari Day is not just a date on the calendar, it's a call to action'

World Safari Day, taking place on Saturday 25 November, was established in 2020 by Beks Ndlovu, chief executive of African Bush Camps to raise awareness about the positive impact of safaris. Here he explains his vision and how agents can get involved.

What is World Safari Day?

World Safari Day celebrates the positive impact of safaris on Africa’s people and wildlife, shining a spotlight on the importance of conserving Africa’s natural resources and authentic wilderness areas.

What do you hope to achieve with this day?

For us, safari is not merely a journey through the wild; it is an intricate tapestry woven from experiences, people, conservation, and culture. These elements are the very soul of an authentic safari experience, and they are interlinked in a delicate balance. With World Safari Day, our aim is to remind the world of the profound importance of conserving and rejuvenating these elements.

Our vision extends far beyond the exhilarating encounters with wildlife. We hope to spark conversations and ideas in the safari tourism industry, ones that holds the key to Africa’s prosperity through transforming people’s livelihoods. This year’s theme focuses on deepening our impact, not expanding our footprint – encouraging travellers to think why we travel and why conscious travel is important. By sharing stories, engaging industry professionals, and involving past and potential safari travellers, the day aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring others to travel responsibly and make a meaningful difference in the world.

The positive impact of safari tourism on Africa’s people and wildlife cannot be overstated. It provides livelihoods, fosters understanding between cultures, and fuels the conservation initiatives that safeguard our natural heritage. I strongly believe in the power of people united behind a noble cause. The idea of World Safari Day is not for it to just be a date on the calendar; it’s now a call to action.

How does African Bush Camps exemplify the positive impact of safaris?

Our Foundation’s projects exemplify the meaningful change we strive for. By focusing on the areas surrounding our camps, we engage with local communities to implement sustainable solutions. Whether it’s supporting education, fostering conservation efforts, or empowering women, our projects are designed to uplift lives and protect our heartlands. We ensure that each head on a pillow makes a difference, for every night you spend at African Bush Camps, together we build bridges that unlock the opportunities for Africa’s people and wildlife.

The launch of our Impact Safaris collection is a testament to our commitment, allow travellers to actively participate in this transformative journey. When you choose to stay with us, you become a partner in our efforts. For example, our Women Empowerment Safari provides a window on our female guides programme, where we aim to develop 25 female guides by 2025, while also supporting women empowerment projects in local communities that invest in healthcare and generate economic activities for families through fashion, basket weaving and jewellery.

What tips can you give agents, so they book "impactful” safaris?

Do your research. When it comes to choosing a camp/s to work with, agents need to understand what that company stands for, why they exist and what impact do they have from their support. With greater numbers of travellers now seeking travel that is sustainable and making a difference, the time is ripe for change.

The market is also booming, so it’s a great time to be promoting safaris. Flights have rebounded back to Africa, and African Bush Camps has seen an increase in demand that surpasses our 2019 occupancies, which was historically one of our best years.

Tips to maximise World Safari Day

World Safari Day is an incredible opportunity to engage your clients and spread the spirit of safari far and wide. Here are a few ideas to inspire your efforts:

  • Stage a wildlife photography contest: encourage past and potential clients to submit their best safari-themed photographs. Feature the winning entries on your various platforms, showcasing actual African wildlife memories.

  • Promote tailored safari packages: curate a range of options that are tailored to specific travellers' interests.

  • Host a safari themed event: create a buzz in your community. Think wildlife-inspired, engaging presentations about African wildlife and conservation, and perhaps a guest speaker sharing their first-hand safari experiences. Such events not only educate but also inspire potential travellers to embark on their own safari adventure.

  • Plan an educational workshop or webinar: talk more directly about the importance of responsible tourism and conservation efforts in safari destinations.

  • Collaborate with influencers: with so many travel influencers or bloggers operating now, it is easy to partner up with people who have a passion for wildlife and conservation. Invite them to share their safari experiences on your social media platforms, reaching a broader audience.
