VIA Rail is the national passenger rail network of Canada, and with more than 7,767 miles of track stretching from coast to coast and as far north as Hudson Bay, it is the perfect way to explore Canada at a more relaxed pace. Due to the variety of the VIA network and the flexibility it offers there is something for everyone, from students and families to our most popular demographic: those who are over 45 years old.
The most well-known train VIA operates is The Canadian. Running between Toronto and Vancouver it takes four nights to complete its epic journey – if you do it in its entirety. The scenery changes every day, from lakes and forests in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and the prairies in between.
Another scenic journey is the Jasper to Prince Rupert. This two-day journey meanders through the incredible landscape of Jasper national park, the Rocky Mountains and Northern British Columbia before arriving in Prince Rupert on the Pacific coast. For these journeys it’s not only the varied scenery that keeps you glued to the windows, wildlife such as bears, moose and elk can often be seen from the train. For your adventure and wildlife enthusiasts you should also consider the service between Winnipeg and Churchill. This two-night journey takes passengers through the province of Manitoba north to the sub-arctic tundra and the small town of Churchill, famous for being the “polar bear capital of the world”.
On the east coast, perhaps recommend hopping on The Ocean. This travels between Montreal and Halifax, passing through the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The one-night journey is perfect for those wanting to explore this unique area of Canada and is often combined with a self-drive adventure. Or, for city lovers, The Corridor service offers regular and frequent services that allow your customers to travel between some of the most popular cities in Canada with ease. These include Canada’s capital Ottawa, the French-Canadian cities of Montreal and Quebec, and the cosmopolitan city of Toronto. It’s an excellent alternative to a fly-drive holiday, and from 2023 there is a new fleet on this service meaning that journey times are reduced even further.
