Explora Journeys has formally named its first ship – Explora I – at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City with the new line ready to start ramping up its operations.
The maritime tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne on the ship’s bow was carried out by Explora I’s godmother, Dr Sylvia Earle, the marine biologist and oceanographer.
Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chair of Explora parent MSC Group, described the 922-passenger ship as “a game-changer” in the luxury cruise arena. Explora I began sailing in July this year with a series of sailings in northern Europe before repositioning to New York.
“We are offering journeys that redefine the very essence of luxurious ocean travel,” said Vago. “We are looking to attract a wider group of discerning travellers who have experienced the finest luxury land-based resorts, but seek more value, more authenticity, and a deeper connection to the world.
“With a further five ships joining the fleet in the next five years, we are committed to delivering the same unique experience on board, wherever you are in the world.”
As part of a €3.5 billion deal with Italian shipbuilding firm, Fincantieri, Explora I is the first of six ships to launch for Explora Journeys.
Explora I has 461 suites, penthouses and residencies, six restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, four swimming pools and nearly 1,000 square metres of wellness and fitness facilities.
Explora II will enter service in summer 2024 and operate in the Mediterranean and the Middle East until April 2025.
Explora III and Explora IV, which will both be powered by liquefied natural gas, will launch in 2026 and 2027 respectively. In 2027, Explora V will enter service and in the following year, Explora VI will launch.
Both ships will be capable of using alternative fuels – bio and synthetic gas – and will also use hydrogen fuel cells for their hotel operations while docked in ports.
