Fairmont Hotels and Resorts Kenya has launched an itinerary taking in three of its properties, designed to immerse guests in the local culture, wildlife and history of the region
The itinerary is intended to promote Kenya beyond the typical safari adventure, and the three properties place an emphasis on conservation.
Fairmont The Norfolk in Nairobi is the first destination on the itinerary, offering guests a cosmopolitan city break. Located in the CBD area of Nairobi, it opened its doors in 1904 and has welcomed guests including Ernest Hemingway, Theodore Roosevelt and Mick Jagger.
The Guest Experience team has devised an activity programme, and recommendations include visiting colonial-age coffee and tea farms; horse-riding excursions in the neighbourhoods of Karen, Kitisuru or Muthaiga; and visiting the National Museum.
Guests then move to Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki, which offers views of Mount Kenya and was established almost 100 years ago. The hotel has a history of animal conservation, including supporting the breeding and rewilding of endangered bongo antelopes in their natural habitat in the forests of Mount Kenya.
Today the hotel sits within the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and the hotel helped open a wildlife corridor to allow safe passage for animals including leopards, elephants and giraffes. Guests are invited on a tour of Mount Kenya and can try bongo-tracking, bike safaris among zebras and excursions to discover the waterfalls of Ngare Ndare Forest Park.
The itinerary concludes at Fairmont Mara Safari Club, a tented hotel in the Ol Choro Oiroua private conservancy, originally established in 1961. The property has been refurbished, with the addition of a lobby and hippo terrace.
Guests can go on safari in the Maasai Mara, join night game drives, treks, balloon rides and helicopter safaris. The property is also close to the Ol Chorro Rhino Sanctuary, where the two last white southern rhinoceros of the Mara are protected.
