Oetker Collection makes Italian debut with new Hotel La Palma

Oetker Collection has opened its first hotel in Italy with Hotel La Palma, housed in Capri’s first hotel, which was originally built in 1822.

The property is the 11th in the Oetker Collection’s Masterpiece Hotels portfolio and the hotel is the oldest on Capri, formerly known as Locanda Pagano. The renovation took more than two years and involved slashing the room count from 80 to 50, including 18 suites, each offering a private balcony or terrace. It also boasts two restaurants and bars, a private beach club, a spa and a newly built pool deck with a bar.

It was the first hotel project for famed designer Francis Sultana, and in a statement the team said: “He has deftly captured Capri’s beautiful lightness and minimalism while injecting flair and flourishes in a nod to the island’s 1950s jet-set era. Calming hues of Mediterranean blue, green and turquoise complement the hotel interior’s soothing natural aesthetic and allow textures to come to the fore to create rooms that are tranquil, tactile, and ultimately, welcoming.”

Gennaro’s restaurant, bar and terrace is under the direction of chef Gennaro Esposito, who has run his own two-Michelin Star restaurant, Torre del Saracino in Vico Equense, Naples, for the last 23 years. Bianca is a newly built rooftop restaurant and bar open for dinner, with views over Capri Village and the sea.

Hotel La Palma’s Da Gioia by La Palma beach club is in Marina Piccola, and is also open to those not staying at the hotel. It offers 42 sun loungers and a separate private beach that can accommodate up to eight guests, serviced by a dedicated team.

La Palma Spa offers three treatment rooms, including a double suite, and a dedicated beauty cabin. There is also a wet area with a salt room, sauna, Turkish bath and sensory showers. A fitness area includes state-of-the-art Technogym machines, while the treatments use Tata Harper products, a brand known for its natural and organic ingredients. Plus, in a hotel first, Italian beauty brand Santa Maria Novella, founded in 1221, provides Hotel La Palma’s bathroom amenities.

Timo Gruenert, chief executive of Oetker Collection, said: “I simply cannot think of anything more exciting than the debut of a true masterpiece hotel in one of the most beautiful and glamorous destinations in the world, the island of Capri. This is an homage to la dolce vita and the legacy of this legendary location – the first hotel in Capri – all while bringing Hotel La Palma once again back to the epicentre of the island’s vibrant social scene. And as with all our masterpiece hotels, we are truly committed to creating a sense of timeless hospitality, deeply rooted in family spirit and genuine kindness.”

The hotel is owned by investors Reuben Brothers, which also acquired the La Taverna Anema e Core nightclub, a famous nightspot frequented by celebrities, located in the same premises.
