Marriott International is to bring the Ritz-Carlton brand to Italy for the first time, with an opening in Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como.
The Ritz-Carlton Bellagio will mark “one of the most significant luxury hospitality projects in the region”, said Marriott, which has signed an agreement with Grandi Immobili Italiani to manage the property.
Slated to open in 2026, the project is a “significant conversion” of the former Hotel Grande Bretagne, a waterfront property slated to offer 59 guest rooms and 46 suites, including two Ritz-Carlton suites, following the overhaul.
Resort facilities are expected to include a destination spa with indoor pool, casual and fine dining restaurants, and state-of-the-art meeting and event facilities.
The hotel is set in extensive parkland and its accomplished gardens will be enhanced by a meditation garden, historical walking trail, large outdoor pool, and private boat dock for access to the famous lake.
Spread over a 16,500 square metre estate, the regeneration scheme is said to be “the most notable hospitality development project in the Lake Como area in recent years”.
“We are thrilled to announce this landmark signing with Grimit. and to be part of such an important restoration of one of Italy’s most acclaimed destinations for luxury travellers,” said Candice D’Cruz, vice president, Luxury Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Marriott.
“Lake Como is the jewel in the crown of the Italian Lake district and we can think of no better destination to debut the Ritz-Carlton brand in Italy. This incredible development showcases our commitment to thoughtfully growing our iconic brand in destinations where we know our guests want to travel most, as well as strengthening our outstanding portfolio of properties across Marriott International’s luxury brands in Italy.”
Created in Belle Epoque style, Hotel Grande Bretagne was one of the destination’s first luxury hotels when it opened in 1850, but fell into disuse at the end of the last century and was then acquired by the Galbusera family.
“As a family, we are deeply rooted in the stunning area of Lake Como and are incredibly proud to be bringing the Ritz-Carlton brand to Bellagio,” said Emanuele Galbusera, president of Grimit. “Our entrepreneurial spirit has made our family European leaders in the metal coil-coating sector with our business Lampre and we will take great pride in bringing that same dedication and passion to this remarkable project.”
Ritz-Carlton currently operates more than 100 hotels in 35 countries and territories.
