Historic hotel in Madrid to reopen after huge renovation, its most extensive in 110 years

This summer, Hotel Ritz, Madrid will officially become known as Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid and will have enhanced facilities such as a heated indoor pool, steam room and fitness centre.

First opened in 1910 by hotelier Cesar Ritz, it will now have 100 rooms and 53 suites, including signature accommodation such as the Royal Suite and the Presidential Suite with views over the Museo Nacional del Prado.

The historical renovation has been overseen by Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz with redesigned interiors by French firm Gilles and Boissier.

“The meticulous restoration is designed to ensure that this legendary property is once again recognised as one of Europe’s greatest hotels,” said James Riley, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s group chief executive.

The ballroom and function spaces will also be restored, and chef Quique Dacosta has been appointed to design, develop and oversee all culinary operations at the hotel’s five restaurants and bars.

Dining will be served under a glass canopy ceiling which had been lost for 80 years, but will be reconstructed.

“I am very excited to work on the culinary offering of Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid to provide unique gastronomic experiences across all restaurants, bars and banquet facilities,” said Quique Dacosta.

Gerard Sintes, general manager of Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid, added: “We look forward to welcoming Quique Dacosta to Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid.

“His desire to deliver more than a culinary experience, with his sense of creativity and his unique character, matches perfectly our mission to delight and satisfy our guests.”

This will be Mandarin Oriental’s second hotel in Spain, alongside a property in Barcelona.
