Wilderness celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and rebranded from Wilderness Safaris in 2022, when it set out its aim to double the amount of land it helps conserve by 2030.

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti will open in mid-July and the luxury mobile tented camp operation has been designed to follow the Serengeti National Park’s legendary Great Migration in Tanzania. The camp will move with the herd as the animals travel throughout the year across the national park, with two camps set up in key locations on the migration route.

It accommodates 12 guests in six en-suite safari tents, and no permanent fixtures are left behind when the camp moves. The camps are solar powered, with rechargeable lights and charging stations in the rooms, as well as WiFi and hot water. Wilderness Usawa Serengeti welcomes children aged six and older, and children under 16 must share a room with an adult.

Wilderness chief commercial officer Hadley Allen said: “Just like the herds, we adapt. The flexibility of our sublime Wilderness Usawa Serengeti camp allows us to move at short notice between a number of seasonal hotspots across the Serengeti, ensuring guests are in the right place, at the right time, to marvel at the unfolding drama.”

Wilderness Mokete opens in Botswana in September as a limited-edition camp offering nine suites, which will be open for two years. The en-suite canvas tents all feature roofs that slide away to reveal stars, bird life and wildlife. A tented lounge area and swimming pool are connected by ground level wooden walkways.

The camp is situated between two national parks in the Mababe region, on the eastern fringe of the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve, to the south of Chobe National Park. Wilderness is the only operator in the region and Mokete is the only lodge for more than 50,000 hectares.

Wilderness Botswana managing director Kim Nixon said: “Picture herds of buffalo by the thousand, the largest concentration in Africa, as well as prolific predators and mega-aggregations of elephant (and at times, zebra during their migration), drawn to the Mababe Marsh. Meaning feast, ‘Mokete’ is a banquet of astounding wildlife, diverse habitats, and untouched natural beauty, and we are immensely proud to be working with our like-minded partner and owner of Mokete, Cobus Calitz, to launch the first camp in this extraordinary, remote area.”

In 2026 Wilderness will build the Meraka camp to take the place of Mokete. Meraka will welcome 24 guests in 10 rooms, including two family units.
