Abta has launched a survey on new replacement training courses for college students looking to start a career in travel.
It comes as part of the Tourism Industry Skills Working Group, which was created last year by several industry associations – including Abta – after the government announced its decision to defund all level three travel and tourism courses from 2026 in favour of academic and technical qualifications such as A and T levels.
Abta asked its members on Thursday (11 January) their views after it identified a path to offer alternative training options to college students interested in working in travel.
All the information gathered in the survey will be shared with relevant bodies to create a curriculum that will still attract young people to the industry.
“We now have a clear way ahead, and the opportunity to shape future college courses for young people with an interest in making a career within our industries is exciting,” said Abta director of public affairs Luke Petherbridge.
“Consultation and engagement with a wide range of industry representatives is a vital part of the approvals process for new courses.”
His words were echoed by the Institute of Travel and Tourism director Claire Steiner, who said: “This is a great opportunity for us to help shape the new courses for the next generation of travel professionals, show our continued support for these qualifications and ensure that they are fit for purpose.”
