Acapulco airport was forced to shut after Hurricane Otis created havoc and destruction upon landing on Mexico’s Pacific south coast on Wednesday (25 October).
Authorities have said the airport would remain shut until further notice as staff was working “efficiently” to restore services as soon as possible.
The airport also confirmed there were no reported injuries despite Hurricane Otis going from a category-one storm to a category five in the space of only 12 hours.
“It’s important to note that, upon restoring services, customers should contact their lines to learn about the status of their flights,” it said in a tweet.
The airport was not the only one to be hit by the category-five storm as the Foreign Office said hotels, communication and transport systems, such as the Cuernavaca-Acapulco motorway, had been badly hit.
UK officials have warned holidaymakers about the severity of the post-storm, as heavy rains are likely to produce “flash flooding and mudslides”.
“Be aware that historically more accidents occur post-storm than during it,” the FCDO said, while urging Brits to follow the advice of local authorities.
