Industry charity Abta LifeLine is urging the travel community for help raising vital funds amid the cost of living crisis - warning many working in the sector “are choosing between heating and eating”.
LifeLine is gearing up for its annual charity day on 15 June and asking travel companies and industry organisations to once again “go tropical” by wearing their best holiday attire to work and donate.
Director Trudie Clements told TTG funding for the charity “has never been more needed” following the intense pressures on its finances caused by the Covid pandemic and ongoing cost of living squeeze.
“The reality is, we are seeing more applications than ever come in,” said Clements. “Travel agents especially are really struggling with the cost of living. Many of these agents are single parent families, and just a small change in their circumstances, such as an increased energy bill, will tip the balance for them and make a once manageable situation unmanageable.”
“By getting involved the charity day will not only help us reach more people that are struggling, it will also help raise the funds we need to continue to provide the support that we do.”
Travel businesses across the industry are also being encouraged to support LifeLine’s £2 per employee appeal.
Clements said she understood many travel companies either run their own in-house charity, or have long-standing fundraising partnerships with other organisations.
“We would just love to be everyone’s second permanent charity as that would be transformation for LifeLine as well as the people we help,” she urged. “If everyone can get behind our travel industry’s charity, together we really can change lives of those in our travel community that really need it most.”
