Amsterdam’s local council has implemented a ban on cruise ships arriving in the city centre – but which lines could be affected by the decision?
The move is the latest attempt by authorities in the Dutch capital to limit visitor numbers and curb pollution, with politicians, according to the BBC, saying the vessels were not in line with the city’s sustainable ambitions.
The decision means the central cruise terminal on the River IJ near Amsterdam’s main train station will close.

Lines which could be affected by the decision include companies such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, P&O Cruises, Fred Olsen, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises, Hurtigruten, MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises.
Earlier this year, the council implemented a ban on the use of cannabis in the city’s famous red light district in a bid to improve the "liveability" for residents.
While unable to provide comment on the decision, Holland America Line said some of its ships are set to move from Amsterdam to Rotterdam in 2025.
MSC Cruises said the closure will not impact itineraries as it will only call in Amsterdam once this year and twice next year. Celebrity Cruises said it was unable to provide a statement.
