Barbuda's new international airport a ‘game-changer’

Antigua and Barbuda’s government have invested $14 million in a new Barbuda airport catering for high-end travellers, attracted to the island’s serene beaches and exclusive experiences

Antigua and Barbuda will be shouting about a key new piece of infrastructure at WTM London this year. The official opening of Barbuda International Airport on 3 October was a significant milestone for the island, marked with a grand ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new airport has a significantly longer runway (6,100ft) than the now defunct Codrington Airport, enabling it to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Embraer 170 (circa 70 seats). Barbuda International is also equipped with a full LED runway lighting system, allowing for regular night landings. The airport code is a particularly memorable BBQ.

The new airport improves the island’s connectivity, with its 600ft parking apron that can accommodate multiple private jets. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority chief executive, Colin C. James, said: “An international airport is a game changer for Barbuda, as we look to attracting the luxury traveller and private jet owners from around the world to Barbuda.”

The government’s vision promoting Barbuda as a premier luxury destination is also reflected in future cruise arrivals, with 23 cruise ships calls from boutique lines set to bring 5,000 visitors to the island this coming winter.

Meanwhile VC Bird International Airport on Antigua is embarking on a runway expansion project, set for completion by December 2025.

The destination welcomed 229,225 overnight visitors in the first eight months of 2024, which represents a 13% growth on arrivals over the same period in 2019, which had been the best year for tourism arrivals.

The team will also be highlighting upcoming events, including the inaugural Black Pineapple Awards, which will take place in Antigua from 6-8 December, 2024, honouring those agents worldwide who play a pivotal role in promoting the destination.

Antigua and Barbuda has also been chosen to host the 43rd Caribbean Travel Marketplace, from 18-22 May 2025.

Hotel news includes the opening of Barbuda’s first Nobu Beach Club (construction begins in early 2025) and One & Only Half Moon Bay, opening in 2027.

While new attractions include rum master classes at the Rum Academy situated on Galleon Beach and Chukka Caribbean Adventure’s new eco-adventure at Fort Barrington (launching in 2025).

With plenty to celebrate, expect the Antigua stand to be one continuous party, with a silent disco, a daily art installation and happy hours to close every day.
