Business leaders have called for the extra bank holiday on 3 June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to be made permanent to thank to the public for their resilience over the past two years.
Several organisations, including the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and UKHospitality, have written to prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor Rishi Sunak calling for a permanent holiday to thank those who have contributed to improving the country during the pandemic, the BBC reports.
Signatories include the bosses of Siemens, Iceland, Punch Pubs, the chairman of the Campaign for Real Ale and Cider, and Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden.
According to the BBC, Meaden said the move would provide the country with a “social and economic stimulus”. City research by the PwC, the BBC reports the government has overestimated the cost of a new bank holiday by 64% and that the actual cost could sit around £831m.
The Press Association said Sunak intended to review the proposal.
