The failure of Cuba specialist, Captivating Cuba, must serve as a call to government to recognise the economic contribution of the UK’s outbound tour operator community – and then properly support them, Aito has said.
Chair Chris Rowles has called on ministers to ensure specialist tour operators are given the support they need at times of crisis, and do their best to create the best possible operating climate.
"The loss of Captivating Cuba is of course hugely regrettable," he said. "This is a call to government to recognise UK outbound tour operators and the value brought to the UK economy.
"We therefore ask the government to ensure that our views are heard when considering regulatory changes or financial support to the industry, to ensure we go from strength to strength."
Rowles also stressed Aito was on hand to help and support Captivating Cuba’s employees through the difficult period. "In the meantime, we wish Captivating Cuba and all the team there the very best at this hugely difficult time in helping their customers," he added. "The Aito team is here to help if help is needed.”
The CAA on Friday (10 May) confirmed Captivating Cuba had ceased trading as an Atol holder after more than 25 years in business.
A member of Aito since 2019, the operator – along with the UK’s other Cuba specialists – has faced a series of challenges and setbacks in recent years, such as the pandemic and the end of direct flights to Cuba.
"Another factor is doubtless the effects of the pandemic, which caused enormous challenges for all tour operators,” Rowles continued, although he stressed the sector had bounced back "strongly" since travel restarted.
Cuba specialists suffered a blow last year when Tui axed its Manchester-Varadero flights for this summer – at the time the only direct connection from the UK.
The failure comes a month after Iron Travel announced two new charter services to Cuba – Gatwick-Cayo Coco and Manchester-Holguin – which had been due to take off this month. These are now subject to further delay and review, TTG understands. Iron Travel has been contacted for comment.
