Chile has stepped up measures to guard against the fresh import of Covid-19 with the introduction of random testing for arrivals, which could result in a five-day stay in a government quarantine facility.
The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for the Latin American destination at the weekend to reflect the new rules, which include additional requirement for arrivals from China.
"Some people, chosen at random, will be required to take Covid tests when entering the country," reads the updated FCDO advice. "If you refuse or if the result is positive, you will have to complete a mandatory five-day quarantine at a government sanitary residence."
Chile’s three-tier Covid alert level is currently at its lowest level. This means non-resident arrivals must either provide evidence of vaccination against Covid-19, or evidence of a negative PCR test result for Covid-19 taken up to 48 hours prior to their last point of departure prior to arriving in Chile.
The country has, however, dropped its proof of travel insurance requirement, although the FCDO said insurance against Covid-related issues remained "highly recommended".
People who have been in China in the past seven days prior to arrival must provide evidence of a negative pre-departure test for Covid-19, and must submit to mandatory testing upon arrival.
