China is poised to end nearly three years of strict Covid quarantine rules, it is reported.
The country is ready to reopen to people with work or study visas, or who are seeking to visit family, the BBC reports.
In what will be one of the final major shifts away from its zero-Covid stance, China will reopen to inbound visitors from 8 January.
China’s immigration authority has also signalled it will resume issuing visitors for Chinese residents to travel overseas from the same date.
The BBC reports travel booking services in China have experienced a spike in traffic since the announcement, although some destinations – including Japan and India – will impose inbound Covid restrictions on arrivals from China.
These variously include evidence of a recent negative test for Covid-19 or of vaccination against the virus, or a period of quarantine on arrival.
