Travel industry tributes have been paid to Greece’s firefighters amid their ongoing battle to bring several serious wildfires under control, which have in recent days torn through southern Rhodes, as well as parts of Corfu and the Greek mainland.
Grecotel led the praise on Friday (28 July), stating it held the “deepest appreciation” for Corfu’s fire department for its professionalism after fires broke out almost a week ago on Sunday (23 July), prompting the evacuation of some 2,500 people.
"On behalf of Grecotel, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to the Corfu fire department and all firefighters that participated in the operation for their immediate action, professionalism and great efforts,” said the group, adding the fires on the island had been "successfully put out".
Grecotel’s remarks were echoed by Sunvil managing director Chris Wright, who was in Corfu when the fires broke out and wrote for TTG on the situation on the ground earlier in the week.
Wright said Greece’s response to the crisis had served as a reminder of its legendary hospitality. “There is a warmth of heart in the people that cannot be taught," said Wright.
"I have personally witnessed offers of accommodation, the provision of food and support for all over the past few days. No wonder so many of us love this historical country and choose to travel here for our precious holidays.”
Wright, though, disputed Grecotel’s assertion that the fires in Corfu had been fully extinguished, telling TTG a fresh fire was being managed between Loutses and Acharavi.
However, he said the situation had improved now that the high winds that have been fanning the flames had abated, allowing guests to return to their properties.
Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer also praised the Greek authorities for their "swift" response to the wildfires, notably their prompt evacuation orders in Rhodes, Corfu and Evia.
"In these difficult times, I would like to extend our thanks to the Greek authorities for all their efforts in arranging evacuations so swiftly and the ongoing brave work of their firefighting teams," said Tanzer.
"The hospitality and help offered by local people reflects their natural compassion and the strong relationship that exists between our two countries."
Tanzer added Abta had been coordinating conference calls for members with representatives from the Greek National Tourist Office and the Foreign Office.
