Cricket stars Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann have given their backing to the charity founded in memory of Westoe Travel apprentice Chloe Rutherford and her boyfriend Liam Curry.
The former England internationals wore blue and pink shirts and sported wristbands in support of the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust during their television coverage of the recent Ashes series in Australia.
The trust was created by family and friends of the couple – who died in the Manchester Arena bombing last May – to help nurture aspiring performers and sportspeople.
Teammates of Liam – a keen cricketer for Marsden Cricket Club in South Shields – met a host of former players, including Vaughan and Swann, to explain the aims of the organisation last summer.
The group travelled Down Under to watch the Ashes, with Vaughan and Swann donning the colours of the trust at the Melbourne test match played after Christmas.
Westoe Travel owner Graeme Brett told TTG the players’ involvement had helped to “create an amazing amount of buzz” for the charity.
“It’s given the family a lot of comfort knowing that there’s so much support out there,” he said.
Brett, who was Chloe’s boss at Westoe, is one of the trustees of the new charity. He said around £25,000 had been raised so far for local causes.
