The UK government should not have removed day two PCR tests for returning British travellers, Wales first minister Mark Drakeford has reportedly said.
"The real answer should have been to have retained the day two PCR tests across the United Kingdom," Drakeford said. "And the failure to do so, I think really is a step away from the duty that the UK government owes to the health of people in this country."
His comments come following the UK government’s decision to overhaul the travel testing and traffic light regime. Wales has not yet decided whether to follow the plans.
The system in England will be simplified with a single red list, with the amber classification scrapped. From 4 October, fully vaccinated travellers will not have to take a pre-departure test, or a day eight test on their return.
Day two PCR tests will be replaced by lateral flow tests later that month.
According to the BBC, Drakeford told the Senedd that while there was no objection to the decision to merge the green and amber lists of countries, reducing the red list was "more concerning".
