Efforts to reopen Doncaster Sheffield airport have taken another step forward, with a preferred operator poised to be revealed "later in the summer".
Tenders for bids to reopen the airport, which shut in 2022, have now been received and are being examined by Doncaster Council. The council said it was hoped a contract could be awarded "later in the year".
Doncaster Council has leased the airport from its owners, Peel Group, with the intention of reopening it. Peel had claimed it was no longer viable following the exit of its only base operator Wizz Air.
As well as choosing a new operator, work will also need to be done with the CAA to re-establish airspace around the airport. Doncaster mayor Ros Jones said: “This is another step forward in our journey to reopen our airport.
“The procurement process is complex and detailed, when we have completed the selection stage, we will proceed to giving an operator preferred bidder status. This will allow City of Doncaster Council and the operator to work together to conclude a contract for the reopening of the airport.”
TTG has contacted Doncaster Council for further comment.
