EasyJet has placed more than 180,000 extra seats to the Canaries on sale and launched new services to the Spanish islands from Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The huge surge in capacity follows Thursday’s announcement by Grant Shapps allowing travel corridors between the UK, the Canary Islands, the Maldives, Denmark and the Greek island of Mykonos.
After the news broke, easyJet said it had seen a 500% increase in searches across flights and holidays to the Canaries.
The carrier’s bolstered flight programme features departures up to the end of March 2021, with fares from £22.99.
EasyJet has also added more seats to previously sold out dates for October half-term with extra flights available from Gatwick and Manchester to Tenerife on Sunday 25 October and 1 November, Manchester to Lanzarote on 25 and 31 October and Gatwick to Lanzarote on 25, 26 and 31 October.
Five new routes from Edinburgh to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura; Glasgow to Tenerife and Gran Canaria; and Belfast to Tenerife taking off from 7 November are also set to launch.
Due to the demand, easyJet has brought forward new routes due to start this winter from Luton to Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, which will now commence ahead of schedule - also from 7 November.
Ali Gayward, easyJet UK country manager, said: “We welcome the announcement from the UK government that the Canary Islands have been added to the list of quarantine exempt countries for British travellers.
“This will mean many of our customers will be able to take a winter sun break to these popular islands or reschedule a holiday that they’ve been unable to take this summer as a result of the last-minute changes to quarantine restrictions.
“Since the government’s announcement last night we’ve already seen a surge of demand for flights and holidays to the Canary Islands – we’ve seen a 500% increase day on day on searches – so we know that there is customer demand, they want to travel and this demonstrates they will do so when travel restrictions are relaxed.
"In response to the demand we’re seeing from our customers we’re putting additional flights on sale from today well as launching five new routes to the Canary Islands from our airports across the UK.
“We continue to encourage the Government to take a lead in moving to testing, as well as the approval of new testing technologies, as soon as possible as effective testing is crucial to get people flying again.”
