Cairo will become an easyJet destination this winter with the launch of flights from Luton as the Egyptian capital prepares to open a major new tourist attraction.
A year-round service will begin on 31 October, operating on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, allowing for long weekend breaks. It will offer a budget alternative to services from Heathrow from British Airways and Egyptair.
The launch of the new route is likely to precede the opening of Cairo’s new Grand Egyptian Museum. Officials say the much-delayed building, which will house many of Egypt’s treasures under one roof for the first time, is set to open in late 2023.
EasyJet’s flights will leave Luton at 11.55, arriving in the Egyptian capital at 18.45. The return flight departs at 19.30, arriving at 22.50.
Cairo becomes the 157th easyJet destination and the airline claims to be the UK’s largest carrier to Egypt.
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager said: “We are delighted to be launching flights for the very first time to Cairo which further strengthens our unrivalled short-haul network from the UK and this continues to demonstrate our confidence in the resilient strength of demand for travel from the UK.
“The new route from London Luton to this iconic destination further expands the choice we are offering our customers, provides greater connectivity to the city to support inbound tourism and business travel alike.”
