Luxury cruise ship Explora I is on track for launch in May next year following its float-out ceremony this week at the Italian shipyard where it is being constructed.
The new ship will make its maiden voyage in 12 months’ time, on an 11-night Mediterranean itinerary from Barcelona to Athens. It will feature 461 oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences onboard, with 10 eateries, 10 indoor-outdoor bar lounges, four swimming pools, large outdoor decks, as well as wellness and fitness facilities.
The new cruise ship is the first of four ships from luxury travel brand Explora Journeys, with the first set for its inaugural sailing next year. Explora II is also under construction with a launch date scheduled for summer 2024.
The float out – a traditional maritime event marking the final phases of construction – was held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy and attended by senior representatives from Explora Journeys, parent company MSC Group, as well as shipbuilders, international media and travel advisors.
All four ships currently on order will be equipped with the latest environmental and marine technologies to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Catalytic reduction technology will lead to 90% less nitrogen oxide emissions than a typical vessel, and shore power plug-in connectivity will reduce emissions in port.
The new ships will also be fitted with underwater noise management systems to help protect marine life.
At the event, the brand said it is exploring the introduction of engines powered by clean fuel – liquefied natural gas – on Explora III and IV.
Chair of MSC’s cruise division Pierfrancesco Vago said: “The brand’s commitment to sustainable ocean travel extends beyond just the environmental and maritime technologies, but is also embedded in our onboard guest experience.
"Destination experiences will be designed to leave a positive impression and footprint on the places and people visited by placing a spotlight on local talents, craftsmanship, culture, gastronomy, traditions. This is all part of the brand’s commitment to its guests and the destinations we visit with them.”
