Atlantic Airways, the Faroe Islands carrier, is to operate to Gatwick this summer.
The airline, which has previously operated from Stansted, will fly on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1 June until 31 August to the archipelago, halfway between Iceland and Norway.
The 800-mile route will be Atlantic Airways’ second UK destination; it also serves Edinburgh twice-weekly on Mondays and Thursdays. The Faroe Islands Vagar airport is a 45-minute drive from the capital Torshavn.
The airline is offering a special £96 one-way rate for the first week of flying in June. Fares after this are from £120 one way, with those from Edinburgh from £200 return.
The Faroes are an autonomous territory of Denmark and the 54,000 people are outnumbered by 80,000 sheep.
A new attraction among the 18 islands is an undersea tunnel, the Sandoy Tunnel, which opened on 21 December 2023, connecting the main island of Streymoy with Sandoy to the south. The tunnel, at 10.8km, includes an underwater world of art installations by local artist Edward Fuglo.
