The UK Foreign Office has advised visitors to check with operators before travelling to Venice next summer, ahead of the Italian city’s plans to impose a tourist entry fee.
In an update to its advice for Italy, the FCDO said visitors to Venice and the surrounding islands for less than two nights are planned to be subject to an entry fee of between €3 and €10 from summer 2023.
"This will be payable via a dedicated website or through an app," the advice stated. "Non-compliance may result in fines of up to €300. Check with your travel operator before travelling."
The fee – which is designed to tackle overtourism – will come into effect next year after years of debate over the proposed measure.
