The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to reflect the ongoing national state of emergency in New Zealand following the devastation brought by Cyclone Gabrielle last month.
New Zealand’s prime minister described Gabrielle as a "once-in-a-generation" weather event, bringing high winds and heavy rain to the country’s North Island that hit coastal communities hard.
"Due to damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle in February, a national state of emergency remains in place for Hawkes Bay and Tairawhiti as the active response phase continues," said the FCDO.
"Affected areas – Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Tararua – are under a national transition period as recovery efforts continue."
Visitors are advised to check New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency website for up-to-date information on the ongoing effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.
