The country’s interior ministry put the death toll at more than 1,000 people by 2pm on Saturday, after the quake hit late Friday evening.
The earthquake hit in an area 44 miles to the south-west of Marrakech.
The update on the FCDO website said: “On Friday 8 September 2023 an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Morocco near Marrakech. You should follow the advice of local authorities, and follow local media. Marrakech and Agadir airports are open, and flights to and from the UK are operating normally.”
The BBC reports that residents and tourists in Marrakech spent the night outside for fear of aftershocks.
