Explore has appointed former Intrepid Travel chief Michael Edwards as its new managing director.
Edwards will take up the role from 5 April, with interim managing director John Telfer returning to his deputy role.
The adventure specialist said Edwards would bring six years’ leadership experience to the role from his time at Intrepid.
Edwards left Intrepid in December 2019 where he was chief growth officer, and has most recently held consultancy roles with Nomadic Tribe and The Travel Collective.
Joe Ponte, chief executive of Explore parent Hotelplan UK, said: "Michael’s experience in the small-group adventure travel category is unparalleled and makes him the perfect recruit to continue Explore’s strategic ambitions to become a global business.
"I look forward to working with Michael and the team at Explore to come back stronger after the Covid-19 pandemic, building on the solid foundations already in place."
Edwards began his career in digital marketing, creating online strategies for travel brands and helping them maximise online sales.
He worked across product, marketing and sales for all seven Tourism & Leisure Holdings brands, before helping establish EMEA as G Adventures’ leading sales region.
He joined Intrepid in 2013 as managing director EMEA before moving into a chief growth officer role, driving development of new source markets and partnerships.
"I’m excited to join Explore at what is a pivotal time for the business as we start to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic," said Edwards.
"I have long admired the company’s approach to sustainable, experiential travel, and its stellar reputation among its customers.
"There is great potential for further growth through travel agents, and I am looking forward to working with the team and our trade partners to build back even stronger."
Telfer will support Edwards’ integration before supporting the Hotelplan board on a part-time basis.
