Glasgow airport could be hit by summer travel disruption after security staff rejected a 5% pay increase, raising the prospect of industrial action.
Around 250 members of the union Unite employed at the airport in the security search area have voted by 94% to reject the pay offer put forward by their employer, security services provider ICTS.
Union bosses said workers considered the deal “a massive pay cut in real terms,” as the retail price index currently stands at 13.5%. Unite has also said it will ballot its members if ICTS doesn’t improve the offer.
“Unless the company improves upon its current offer then Glasgow Airport faces a summer of travel chaos because it simply can’t operate safely and efficiently without these essential workers,” said Unite regional industrial officer Pat McIlvoe.
“We are encouraging ICTS to heed the warning before this dispute escalates potentially to strike action.”
The news comes as Heathrow security staff have announced they will down tools for another eight days throughout May as part of a long-standing dispute over pay.
Unite members will strike between 4-6, 9-10 and 25-27 May after walking out for ten days in the run up to Easter.
