EasyJet’s ground handlers at Gatwick have called off planned strike action later this week and in August after accepting a new pay deal, but a threat of action remains with several of the airport’s other ground handlers still in pay disputes.
The Unite union confirmed on Monday (24 July) 600 of its DHL members at the airport, contracted by easyJet, had voted to accept a 15% pay rise, as well as an uplift in skills pay, meaning their hourly rates will increase by between 15% and 31%.
This comes is in addition to a new shift premium of £1.25 per hour when working between midnight and 4.59am.
“This is an excellent result secured by the steadfast position of our DHL members,” said Unite general secretary Sharon Graham. “Once again, workers are gaining real material benefits from Unite’s absolute focus on improving jobs, pay and conditions.”
The walkout – which was due to take place between 28 July and 1 August and again over 4-8 August – was suspended on 18 July after the union put DHL’s offer to its members.
A threat of summer strike action at Gatwick remains, though, with a further 450 Unite members working for ground handlers Menzies and ASC still poised to strike.
They are currently being balloted on improved pay offers. If they were to reject them, ASC workers at Gatwick would strike from 28 July to 1 August and over 4-8 August, with Menzies workers joining them over 4-8 August if they reject their deal.
